Deconstructing Yourself Costa Rica Retreat

SOLD OUT

at Blue Spirit Costa Rica

Saturday, August 3 – Saturday, August 10, 2024

Taught by Michael Taft

Come to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica for a full week of meditating, learning, and practicing with Michael Taft and the Deconstructing Yourself sangha. We will focus on nondual meditation practice, with the particular theme of embodiment in meditation and in life.

If you have studied with Michael Taft previously, in the Reversing the Stack, Vast Sky Mind, or Tantra Courses, or if you have followed his teachings at The Alembic or on Youtube or are a one-on-one coaching student of his, you are the intended audience for this retreat (you know who you are).

If you haven’t worked with Michael in any way before, but have a strong background in meditation, particularly in nondual, Vajrayana, or Hindu tantric traditions, then you will probably be fine at this retreat, albeit with some additional learning of the framework, vocabulary, practices, etc., required.

If you are new to meditation, or have only practiced using apps and the like, this retreat may be too challenging for you. Contact us if you aren’t sure.

Silence vs. Community

The retreat will be conducted in the manner of a nondual practice community, which means that connection and integration is as important as enclosure and focus. To facilitate that vision, we’ll be keeping complete retreat silence in the meditation hall. Outside of the meditation hall, participants are welcome to speak. The option to speak with others fosters a thriving practice community, as well as integration of nondual practice, and works very well. If you don’t wish to speak with others, we’ll provide you with an “in silence” tag you can wear.

Meetings with Michael

Michael Taft will meet with each student at least once for a check-in during the retreat. This is a time to meet Michael, talk about what’s happening in your practice, and to get a question answered. Additionally, there will be Q&A sessions in the big room if you don’t mind asking your questions in public.

There will be signup sheets available to schedule your meeting. Just put your name on the sheet for the day and time you desire and then go to the place where Michael is holding interviews at that time. Please be there on time and don’t miss your appointment. This is a big retreat, and there will not likely be extra time slots available. Please sign up for only one meeting.

Meditative Movement Practice

Michael is pleased to have Laura Ward teaching movement at the retreat. She will be offering optional meditative movement sessions each afternoon. These will be mat classes informed by functional movement, Pilates, and yoga, and will include aspects of the Universal Mandala in breath and motion. This will be an opportunity to deepen your spacious embodiment while releasing some of the kinks from sitting practice. Sitting still for long hours can be painful and meditative movement is an excellent way to get your body in motion again while maintaining a meditative mindset. No former experience is required for this practice.

There will be a complete retreat schedule each day, but participants are not required to attend every session. It’s up to you if you want to go hiking, swimming, get a massage, or whatever else whenever you wish during the retreat.

How it works

You pay for the retreat in two parts: part one here for the retreat itself, and then part two for the room and board. On this page, you can sign up for the retreat by paying for the retreat teaching. Once you have enrolled, we will send you a contact email to discuss housing options with use. Then you will choose your housing option, and pay for that separately. All housing options include meals.

The prices for the teaching portion of the retreat are:
Basic – 1200
Supporter – 1700
Scholarship – 700
Partner – 600 (Will not participate in the teaching portion. Scroll down for details.)

You can purchase these at the bottom of the page.

So the total cost of the retreat will the teaching cost (whichever option you choose) plus the housing/meal cost (whichever option you choose). Obviously, any travel costs are not covered here.

The Basic option is exactly what it sounds like.

The Supporter option is for students who generously choose to help support the Scholarship students. If you can afford this option, please consider helping out. Thank you.

The Scholarship option is a reduced rate for those who require it. Housing choices for the scholarship students don’t include some of the high-end options. Scholarships are only available depending on Supporters, so if you want to get on the wait list for this offer.

The Partner option is for partners who want to come to Blue Spirit with their meditating partners, but who don’t want to do the retreat. There is a half-price fee (600 USD) to cover for the retreat spot they are making unavailable for someone else. Anyone taking the Partner option cannot attend the retreat teachings. The Partner option is only available for partners of someone taking the retreat.

Here are the housing options and the associated prices. They are simply listed here for your convenience. You will actually choose your preferences via email with us.

Lodging Costs

The accommodations at Blue Spirit are resort-level and very nice. Some of these have the option for a large single bed (for an individual or couple) or two smaller beds (for sharing the room).
